“No, this can’t be happening!” My husband’s excitement for our wedding night turned to horror the moment I slipped out of my wedding dress, revealing the secret I’d been hiding all day. The perfect facade I’d maintained crumbled, exposing a truth he never expected.
The day had been a fairytale — Greg waiting at the end of the aisle with that boyish grin, thinking this was the beginning of our perfect life together. But I knew better. While Greg believed this was our happy-ever-after, I had been sitting on a secret that would shatter it all.
The wedding was flawless. Champagne flowed, laughter echoed, and Greg’s parents beamed with pride. The whole day was a dream come true — for him. As for me, I was playing the part, smiling at the right moments, laughing at jokes, and dancing with my new husband. But inside, I knew it was only a matter of time before the truth would come crashing down.
As the evening wore on, Greg’s eagerness for our wedding night was palpable. His touches lingered, his smile too eager. He had no idea that tonight wasn’t going to end the way he imagined.
We said our goodbyes, thanked the guests, and made our way to the suite Greg’s parents had so generously offered for our first night as husband and wife. As he closed the door behind us, I could feel the shift in the air — the anticipation thick. He came toward me, his hands already reaching for the zipper of my dress.
“I’ve been waiting all night for this,” he whispered, his breath warm against my neck.
I smiled a secretive smile. “Me too.”
He slowly unzipped my dress, oblivious to the storm brewing beneath the surface. When the dress finally dropped to the floor, I turned to face him. His eyes widened as he stared at my body, his smile vanishing in an instant.
“No…” His voice was barely a whisper, trembling with disbelief. “No, no, no! This can’t be happening!”
There, etched across my torso, was a temporary tattoo of Greg’s ex, Sarah. Below her face were the damning words Greg had spoken to her the night before our wedding: “One last taste of freedom before I’m bound to the same body forever.”
His legs buckled as he collapsed to the floor. He was devastated, and that was exactly the reaction I’d been waiting for.
“How did you know?” he stammered through sobs, his gaze locked on the tattoo.
I crossed my arms, my voice cold. “Sarah made sure I knew everything.”
“I didn’t mean it,” he cried. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean any of it.”
That’s when we heard footsteps outside the door. Without warning, Greg’s parents, Marianne and James, burst into the room, their faces filled with alarm.
“What’s going on?” Marianne asked, her voice shaky. Her eyes darted between Greg, a sobbing mess on the floor, and me standing over him, my chest exposed with the tattoo on full display.
I didn’t hesitate. “Greg cheated on me.”
Marianne gasped, clutching her chest, while James stood frozen in the doorway, his usually calm demeanor cracking under the weight of the revelation. The tension in his clenched fists told me everything.
For a moment, there was nothing but stunned silence. Greg remained on the floor, his hands gripping his hair as if that would stop his world from unraveling.
“Greg? Is this true?” Marianne’s voice quivered, desperate for an explanation that would undo the truth she’d just been hit with.
Greg couldn’t respond. His whole body shook with guilt and fear.
“Tell me!” Marianne’s voice cracked, her disbelief morphing into panic. “Tell me this isn’t true!”
James stepped forward, his voice tight with barely contained fury. “Gregory,” he growled, “is this true?”
Still, Greg couldn’t bring himself to answer. His sobs had quieted, but he remained crumpled on the floor, unable to face the truth.
I decided to finish what I started. “He slept with Sarah the night before our wedding. He told her he needed ‘one last taste of freedom before he was bound to the same body forever.’”
Marianne let out a choked sob and collapsed onto the bed, devastated by the betrayal. James’s face hardened, his disgust clear.
“You’ve disgraced this family,” James spat, his voice trembling with anger. “How dare you do this to Lilith? How could you betray her like this?”
Greg finally looked up, eyes wild with panic. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I didn’t mean for this to happen. It was a mistake.”
“A mistake?” I repeated, my voice rising. “You call cheating on me the night before our wedding a mistake? No, Greg. It wasn’t a mistake. It was a choice. And now, you’re dealing with the consequences.”
Greg reached for me, his hands trembling. “Please, Lilith. I love you. I’ll do anything. Just don’t leave me.”
I let out a cold laugh. “Love? You don’t know the first thing about love. If you did, you wouldn’t have done this.”
He pleaded again, but I stepped back, keeping my distance. “I’m done, Greg. This marriage is over. You ruined it the moment you crawled back to Sarah.”
James stepped in then, his voice low and dangerous. “Get up,” he ordered, his patience wearing thin. “Get up and face what you’ve done.”
Greg slowly stood, his legs wobbling beneath him, looking pathetic in his disheveled suit. I glanced at Marianne, still weeping on the bed, and then back at James, his fury barely contained.
“I’m leaving,” I announced, my voice steady. “You can deal with him.”
“Lilith, please,” Greg begged one last time, but I was already done. I slipped on my robe, covering the tattoo, and walked toward the door.
As I left the room, I heard James’s final words, laced with anger. “This is your doing, Greg. You’ve ruined everything.”
I walked down the stairs, feeling lighter with every step. His pitiful sobs echoed behind me, but they no longer mattered. I was free — free from the lies, free from the betrayal, and finally free from him.
