Tragic Loss on First Day of School
A Family’s Heartbreak
As summer ends, thousands of families prepare to send their children back to school. Unfortunately, the Crustner family will not be able to experience their child’s education journey. Tragedy struck just moments after 9-year-old Payton Crustner posed for a photo marking her first day in fourth grade.
Devastating Accident
Excited for her first day, Payton Crustner’s life was cut short before she could even make it to the classroom. She died in a car accident just 10 minutes after the photo was taken, according to Houston KHOU TV.
Authorities reported that 18-year-old Marcus Wayne Dukes was driving on the highway when he turned left and veered into oncoming traffic. He collided with a car driven by 32-year-old Miranda Michelle Clark, who had three children in the backseat: Payton, her 16-year-old brother, and an unidentified 3-year-old.
Importance of Seat Belts
KYTX TV station revealed that Payton was ejected from the car during the accident and was declared dead at the scene due to severe injuries. Miranda was wearing a seat belt, but Payton only had a lower belt on, which failed to keep her safely strapped in. Marcus Dukes, Payton’s brother, and the unidentified 3-year-old were not wearing seat belts.
The crash victims were rushed to the hospital, with Payton’s teen brother still in critical condition. Fortunately, the other three involved suffered only minor injuries.
Fundraising for Funeral and Medical Expenses
A family member started a Facebook fundraiser for Payton’s funeral expenses and her brother’s treatment, raising almost $18,000 so far. The post reads: “Payton Lynn Crustner, 9 years old, was taken from this world this morning before her first day of 4th grade, please keep this family in your prayers.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Payton’s family during this difficult time.
This tragic story serves as a reminder of the importance of wearing seat belts. While it may seem obvious, some people still neglect to use them. Seat belts are the most crucial safety feature in a car, both for front and rear passengers.
